Split insomnia into its two kinds before buying anything, because audio treats them very differently. Sleep-onset insomnia (can’t fall asleep — racing mind, tension) is the kind hypnosis genuinely helps: it’s an arousal problem, and arousal is the lever. Maintenance insomnia (wake at 3am, wired) and early waking respond less reliably and can signal something else (anxiety, depression, sleep apnea, alcohol rebound) that wants a doctor, not a playlist.

Onset insomnia is the audio-responsive kind; maintenance insomnia is a symptom until proven otherwise.

The sleep-onset protocol

  1. Fixed wake time — the single highest-leverage move in all of sleep science; the body builds sleep pressure against a stable anchor.
  2. Wind-down audio nightly — 20–45 minute sleep session, in bed, timer set. Same track for two weeks minimum (the conditioned drop deepens with repetition — see how to judge a sleep session).
  3. The clock rule: never check the time mid-night. A clock turns “I’m awake” into “I’ve only got X hours” — the arithmetic that manufactures insomnia.
  4. 20-minute rule: awake and frustrated after ~20 minutes, get up, dim room, boring activity, back when sleepy. Bed must stay associated with sleep, not struggle.

Expect onset improvement within a week or two of consistent use. Full re-patterning: four to six weeks.

What the research says

Meta-analyses of hypnosis for sleep show the strongest effects on sleep-onset latency and subjective sleep quality in people with moderate insomnia — modest, real, and safest in the toolbox. It stacks cleanly with CBT-I (the gold standard): hypnosis handles the arousal, CBT-I handles the structure.

When to escalate

Waking unrefreshed despite adequate hours (apnea screen), 3am waking with low mood (depression screen), restless legs, or months of maintenance insomnia — these get a medical workup. Sleep audio will still help the settling part; it just shouldn’t be the only thing happening.

Common questions

Can I become dependent on the audio to sleep? A conditioned association, yes — and it’s benign. You can wean by switching to body-scan-only nights periodically. The alternative (unmedicated insomnia) is worse; take the crutch.

CBT-I or hypnosis? CBT-I first for chronic insomnia — it’s the gold standard and short. Hypnosis handles the arousal piece CBT-I addresses least, and the stack is better than either alone.

Sleep meds alongside? Prescriber’s call on timing; audio is compatible. The classic pattern: meds handle the acute crisis, CBT-I + audio handle the exit ramp.

Does the “same track forever” rule ever break? Only when you genuinely stop hearing it. Rotate then — the sleep session gates apply to the replacement.
