← Pain relief

Tension headaches are the pain condition where hypnosis has some of its cleanest evidence: controlled trials show meaningful reductions for many sufferers, and the mechanism is obvious in hindsight — the “tension” in tension headache is jaw, neck, and shoulder musculature running chronically tight plus a nervous system that reads the resulting pressure as threat. Relaxation training is literally symptom-specific treatment for the first part and pain-gate work for the second.

The protocol

Daily prevention (15–20 min): relaxation or body-scan session emphasizing jaw, neck, shoulders — the standard trigger triad. Headache frequency drops over 2–4 weeks for most consistent users; this is the layer the trials measured.

At onset (3–5 min, as early as possible): long exhales + a brief body-scan release of jaw/neck/shoulders + warmth or heaviness imagery in the tight areas. Early intervention matters — tension headaches that run for hours set sensitization in motion that outlasts the muscles.

Screen the lifestyle layer honestly: screens at fixed focal distances, jaw clenching (wake with a sore jaw = night clenching, ask a dentist), hydration, caffeine timing, and the classic — the headache that only arrives on weekends (caffeine withdrawal sleeping in). No audio out-trains a daily mechanism.

Choosing sessions

Headache-specific or “warmth and heaviness” autogenic-style content is the classic fit — autogenic training has decades of headache research behind it. Any skilled relaxation script covering upper-body release works. Migraine is a different animal: audio helps as a support layer (stress is a trigger), but migraine wants medical management — preventives and acute meds that actually work exist.

Red flags that aren’t tension

Sudden “worst headache of my life,” headache with fever/stiff neck, headache after head injury, steadily worsening pattern, or any headache with vision changes or neurological symptoms — those are same-day medical attention, not relaxation homework. The audio is for the boring, bilateral, end-of-day, tension-flavored kind.

Common questions

How often is “daily prevention”? Five to six days a week for the first month; the trial protocols mostly used near-daily practice. Frequency drops once baseline headache days fall.

Heat or ice alongside? Whatever your body prefers — heat releases the muscular layer, which is the one the audio also works. They stack; neither replaces posture/screen/caffeine fixes.

Can this help migraines too? As a support layer (stress-trigger reduction, pre-attack calm), yes. Migraine prevention and acute treatment are medical — the modern meds work well and are worth the conversation.

Cluster headaches? Out of audio’s territory entirely — those are neurological, severe, and need a specialist yesterday.
